Day 2

I should probably mention that my wife, Katie, and I decided to begin this fast while away on a work retreat. Under normal circumstances, I would have eaten everything they put in front of me at this retreat. This time I drank juice. And lots of it.

I think I was expecting to be more miserable. That's a nice surprise. But it's interesting how seemingly hard-wired are some of my responses to food. I see a bag of chips, and I want to open it and eat half in a sitting. Or a bagel. Or that piece of pizza in the trash. You get the idea.

I guess that's one big thing that I'm hoping to get out of this experiment. I don't like feeling that the food has the power, and not me. I want to have the control, not for its own sake, but so that I will not be enslaved by anything, so that I can glorify God in my body, so that I can beat my body and make it my slave, as Paul says in 1 Cor. 9:27.

So yeah, I hope at the end of this that my eating and the way that I approach food will better glorify God. In the meantime, this endeavor will require much prayer, as it is easy to try to do things on my own strength (even something as ridiculous as this), but as the Lord has been teaching me over the past few months, that doesn't get me anywhere.

Anyway, day 2 is down. A bit hungry at times, but again, I'm surprised at how little that has been an issue. We'll see how it goes in the next few days.

Here's a recipe I made up today. Not too bad. The goal was to make a green juice that was a little better than Joe Cross' Mean Green.

Not-so-nasty green juice

1 bunch kale, stems removed
1/2 cucumber
1 lemon
2 Granny Smith apples
1/4 pineapple, peeled and cored
1 mango, pureed

1. Puree the mango in a food processor.
2. Juice that stuff.
3. Add the mango and stir.
4. Pour over ice and wonder that something that looks so strange could taste so good.
